ROTORCRAFT FLYING HANDBOOK

PREFACE
The Rotorcraft Flying Handbook is designed as a technical manual for applicants who are preparing for their private, commercial, or flight instructor pilot certificates with a helicopter or gyroplane class rating. Certificated flight instructors may find this handbook a valuable training aid, since detailed coverage of aerodynamics, flight controls, systems, performance, flight maneuvers, emergencies, and aeronautical decision making is included. Topics, such as weather, navigation, radio navigation and communications, use of flight information publications, and regulations are available in other Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) publications.

This handbook conforms to pilot training and certification concepts established by the FAA. There are different ways of teaching, as well as performing flight procedures and maneuvers, and many variations in the explanations of aerodynamic theories and principles. This handbook adopts a selective method and concept to flying helicopters and gyroplanes. The discussion and explanations reflect the most commonly used practices and principles. Occasionally, the word “must” or similar language is used where the desired action is deemed critical. The use of such language is not intended to add to, interpret, or relieve a duty imposed by Title 14 of the Code of Federal Regulations (14 CFR). This handbook is divided into two parts. The first part, chapters 1 through 14, covers helicopters, and the second part, chapters 15 through 22, covers gyroplanes. The glossary and index apply to both parts.

Review & Description

A Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist tells the amazing story of how a group of imprisoned boys won their freedom, found justice, and survived one of the darkest and least-known episodes of American history.

In the early twentieth century, United States health officials used IQ tests to single out "feebleminded" children and force them into institutions where they were denied education, sterilized, drugged, and abused. Under programs that ran into the 1970s, more than 250,000 children were separated from their families, although many of them were merely unwanted orphans, truants, or delinquents.

The State Boys Rebellion conveys the shocking truth about America's eugenic era through the experiences of a group of boys held at the Fernald State School in Massachusetts starting in the late 1940s. In the tradition of Erin Brockovich, it recounts the boys' dramatic struggle to demand their rights and secure their freedom. It also covers their horrifying discovery many years later that they had been fed radioactive oatmeal in Cold War experiments -- and the subsequent legal battle that ultimately won them a multimillion-dollar settlement.

Meticulously researched through school archives, previously sealed papers, and interviews with the surviving State Boys, this deft exposé is a powerful reminder of the terrifying consequences of unchecked power as well as an inspiring testament to the strength of the human spirit. Read more

Standards in Weapons Training (Special Operations Forces)

Purpose
a. This pamphlet provides Department of the Army (DA) requirements
for weapon training programs as stated in AR 350-41, Army
Forces Training. This pamphlet applies to weapons and weapon
systems used throughout U.S. Army Special Operations Command
(USASOC) for both Active and Reserve components. The following
training programs are included in this pamphlet—
• Gunnery training programs consisting of standards for qualification.
• Suggested training strategies for individual and crew-served
weapon systems to achieve those standards.
• Ammunition requirements to execute the training strategies.
b. The Army training goal is a combat-ready force prepared to
deploy on short notice and to fight and defeat enemies. To help
achieve that goal, this pamphlet:
(1) Provides commanders and other unit trainers with a common
set of weapon and weapon system qualification standards.
(2) Provides commanders and other unit trainers with suggested
weapon training strategies that will lead to the attainment and sustainment
of standards and provide a model of resource allocation.
(3) Provides commanders with measurable standards for evaluating
a portion of their overall training readiness.

Purpose
