Review & Description

When God Laughs(Annotated)
Jack London produced this collection of twelve short stories toward the end of his career in 1911. Named after the first story - about a couple that tries in vain to uphold an intensely idealistic romance against the erosions of time and the inconstancy of human nature - the collection explores themes for which London became famous: the struggle for survival in the midst of hostile environments, human nature's most elemental drives, and worker abuse in industrialized society.
Highly Recommend!
Born as John Griffith Chaney in San Francisco on January 12, 1876, JACK LONDON grew up in a world witnessing the settlement of the last frontier. He was raised by his mother and his stepfather, whose surname, London, he took. Many of the details of London's early life remain speculative, but as an adolescent he adopted the nickname Jack, and at the age of fourteen he quit school to seek adventure.

The last decade of London's life was marked by physical ailments, including a kidney disease of unknown origin. He died at the age of forty of gastrointestinal uremic poisoning, which caused kidney failure on November 22, 1916. Nevertheless, during his short career, he had published more than fifty books, including novels, nonfiction works, and volumes of short stories, as well as hundreds of articles, essays, and reviews. When God Laughs(Annotated)
